10 Things To Do In Marathon
10 Must-Do Activities in Marathon, Florida
Marathon, Florida sits at the heart of the Florida Keys, offering the perfect mix of adventure, relaxation, and natural beauty. From world-class fishing to pristine beaches, here are the 10 best things to do during your Keys vacation.
1. Snorkel Sombrero Reef
Just 6 miles offshore, Sombrero Reef is one of the most popular snorkeling destinations in the Florida Keys. The reef features a historic lighthouse, vibrant coral formations, and depths ranging from 6 to 25 feet—perfect for all skill levels. Look for parrotfish, angelfish, and sea turtles in the crystal-clear waters. Book a snorkel charter from one of Marathon’s marinas for a half-day trip.
2. Walk or Bike the Old Seven Mile Bridge
The historic Old Seven Mile Bridge, now called the Old Seven, is open for walking, biking, and fishing. This 2.2-mile stretch offers stunning views of the turquoise Atlantic on one side and Florida Bay on the other. Arrive early morning for the best lighting and fewer crowds. Free parking is available at the Marathon end.
3. Visit the Turtle Hospital
The Turtle Hospital is a working sea turtle rehabilitation facility that offers educational tours daily. Learn about the different species of sea turtles that nest in the Keys, see the hospital’s permanent residents, and watch injured turtles during their recovery. Tours run every 30 minutes and reservations are recommended—it’s one of Marathon’s most popular attractions.
4. Fish the Florida Keys
Marathon is known as the “Heart of the Keys” for fishing. Charter a boat for offshore adventures targeting mahi-mahi, sailfish, and tuna. Or try flats fishing for bonefish, tarpon, and permit in the backcountry. Bridge fishing at the Seven Mile Bridge is popular for tarpon during spring migration. Many of our vacation rentals offer private docks for your own boat.
5. Relax at Sombrero Beach
Sombrero Beach is Marathon’s premier public beach, featuring soft sand, calm waters, and full facilities including restrooms, picnic pavilions, and a playground. The shallow water is perfect for families with children. Arrive before 10 AM on weekends to secure parking. It’s completely free and one of the best beaches in the Florida Keys.
6. Explore Crane Point Hammock
This 63-acre nature preserve protects one of the last remaining tropical hardwood hammocks in North America. Walk the nature trails through mangroves and hammock, visit the Museum of Natural History, and see the historic Adderley House—a restored Bahamian-style home from the 1900s. The preserve also operates the Marathon Wild Bird Center.
7. Kayak the Mangroves
Paddle through the peaceful mangrove tunnels that wind through Marathon’s backcountry. Guided eco-tours take you to hidden lagoons where you can spot juvenile sharks, rays, and tropical birds. Several outfitters offer kayak and paddleboard rentals, or launch from one of our waterfront vacation rentals for your own adventure.
8. Dive the Thunderbolt Wreck
For certified divers, the Thunderbolt is a 188-foot former research vessel intentionally sunk in 1986 to create an artificial reef. Sitting in 115 feet of water, this advanced dive features massive schools of fish, barracuda, and the occasional goliath grouper. Several Marathon dive shops run daily trips to this iconic wreck.
9. Catch a Sunset at the Old Seven
The west end of the Old Seven Mile Bridge offers some of the most spectacular sunset views in the Florida Keys. Pack a picnic, bring a bottle of wine, and watch the sun sink into Florida Bay. The bridge is open until sunset, and the golden hour lighting is perfect for photography.
10. Dine on Fresh Seafood
Marathon’s waterfront restaurants serve the freshest seafood in the Keys. Try the famous lobster reuben at Keys Fisheries, enjoy sunset cocktails at Castaway, or treat yourself to upscale seafood at Barracuda Grill. Many restaurants source their fish directly from local fishermen—you can’t get fresher than that.
