Why Key Colony Beach Is the Florida Keys’ Quietest Oceanfront Escape

Key Colony Beach is a small, self-governing island city in the Middle Keys, connected to Marathon by a single causeway. It has its own private beach, a par-3 golf course, tennis and pickleball courts, and a walkable grid of palm-lined streets. It feels more like a residential island than a tourist stop. People live here year-round, and the visitors who book a week tend to come back in Key Colony Beach Vacation Rental.

Quick Answer: Key Colony Beach is a tiny, walkable island between Marathon and the Seven Mile Bridge with its own beach, golf course, and recreation facilities, plus easy access to all of Marathon’s restaurants and attractions.

Where Exactly Is Key Colony Beach?

Key Colony Beach sits at approximately mile marker 53.5, just off the Overseas Highway on the ocean side of Marathon. The island is less than a mile long and half a mile wide. You reach it by a short causeway off US-1, and within seconds the highway noise drops away. The speed limit is 25 mph everywhere on the island, and most residents get around by golf cart or on foot.

Geographically, it sits between the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico, with water on every side. Marathon proper is your nearest neighbor for groceries, gas, and dining. Key West is about an hour south. Miami International Airport is roughly two hours north via the Overseas Highway.

What Can You Actually Do in Key Colony Beach?

Most Florida Keys visitors assume they need to be in Key West or Islamorada for things to do. Key Colony Beach says otherwise. There’s more recreation packed into this island than you’d expect, and almost all of it is within walking distance.

On the island itself

The city maintains a full set of public recreation facilities. There is a par-3 golf course right on the island, short but with water views on most holes. Tennis and pickleball courts stay busy in the mornings and evenings when the sun drops lower. There is also a bocce ball court, basketball courts, and a mini golf course for families with younger kids.

Three parks and a paved walking path with exercise stations line the island’s perimeter. Mornings and late afternoons, you’ll see residents and visitors jogging, walking dogs, and stopping to watch herons fish from the seawall.

On the water

Key Colony Beach is surrounded by flats, channels, and open ocean. Kayaking and paddleboarding are popular from the shoreline access points. Snorkeling at nearby Sombrero Reef is a short boat ride away. The reef is part of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, so the coral and fish populations are in better shape than at unprotected sites.

The island also sits within range of productive Middle Keys fishing grounds. Offshore charter boats leave from Marathon’s marinas daily, targeting mahi-mahi, tuna, and sailfish depending on the season. On calmer days, the flats around Key Colony Beach hold bonefish and permit.

Just off the island

A five-minute drive puts you at Sombrero Beach, one of the few public sandy beaches in the Florida Keys. The Turtle Hospital in Marathon runs 90-minute guided tours where you can see rescued sea turtles up close. The Seven Mile Bridge is also close, and walkers and cyclists can use the Old Seven Mile Bridge for an out-and-back over open water.

What’s It Like Staying at The Cay?

The Cay is an oceanfront condo community on Key Colony Beach. You get the privacy of your own unit but share amenities that would be expensive to maintain on your own: a private sandy beach, a heated pool with lounge chairs and umbrellas, and an oceanfront clubhouse.

The grounds are tidy. There’s a tiki-hut deck with outdoor dining, a bar area, and two gas grills. A shaded courtyard picnic area is where most people end up in the afternoons.

The Cay also has its own tennis and pickleball courts on-site, separate from the city’s public courts. It’s walking distance to Key Colony Beach’s golf course, parks, and marina, which makes it practical for families and small groups who want beach access without resort pricing.

Now Open: Sandbar Serenade at The Cay

We recently added Sandbar Serenade to our Key Colony Beach lineup. It works for couples, small families, or groups of friends who want an oceanfront condo with more space than a hotel room.

The layout

Sandbar Serenade is a two-story townhome-style unit. The main floor has the full kitchen, dining area, and an open living room with a sectional that seats up to seven. A private balcony off the living area comes with rocking chairs and overlooks the community pool and tropical grounds. Both bedrooms are upstairs: a king primary suite with an ensuite walk-in shower, and a second bedroom with two twin beds. There is also a sleeper sofa downstairs for extra guests.

Every bedroom has USB charging, ceiling fans, closets with hangers, and premium white linens. The kitchen has cookware, dishes, glassware, a toaster, and a blender. You can actually cook here, which saves money on a week-long stay.

Who it’s best for

Two couples traveling together do well here. One pair takes the king, the other gets the twins or the sleeper sofa. Families with kids benefit from the two-story layout, which puts bedrooms on a different floor from the living area, so adults can stay up after the kids are down. The 7-night minimum and private beach also work for anyone who’s tired of fighting for lounge chairs at a resort.

Where Should You Eat Near Key Colony Beach?

Key Colony Beach itself is small, so most dining happens in Marathon, a short drive across the causeway. There are more waterfront restaurants now than there were five years ago, and the quality has caught up to the setting.

Our go-to recommendations

Sparky’s Landing sits on the waterfront at 5800 Overseas Highway in Marathon. It’s casual, lively, and known for its fresh fish tacos and live music. Happy hour draws a crowd, so plan to arrive early if you want a seat. It used to be on Key Colony Beach before Hurricane Irma, and locals followed it to the new location.

Burdines Waterfront is a Marathon institution at 1200 Oceanview Avenue. The fried key lime pie alone is worth the stop. It sits on Boot Key Harbor with a tiki roof and boats pulling up to the dock while you eat. They’ve been open for over 30 years.

The Island Fish Co. at mile marker 54 bayside is where we send guests who want sunset views with their dinner. The tiki bar claims to be the longest in the Florida Keys, and the raw bar is worth trying. Open daily for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Sunset Grille & Raw Bar sits at the foot of the Seven Mile Bridge with a wide-open western view. The pool is open to diners, which makes it a popular all-afternoon destination. Their Sunday pool parties have been running for years.

For groceries, Publix and Winn-Dixie are both in Marathon, about five minutes from Key Colony Beach. Stock up before settling in, especially if you plan to grill at The Cay’s tiki deck.

Is Key Colony Beach a Good Fit for Families?

It is. The walkability is the biggest factor. Kids can ride bikes on the quiet streets, the pool at The Cay is heated and fenced, and the private beach has calm, shallow water. Beach toys, coolers, and pool floats are included at Sandbar Serenade, which cuts down on the gear you need to pack.

The Turtle Hospital is a five-minute drive and draws families year-round. Tours run hourly from 9 AM to 4 PM, and they sell out during peak season, so book online ahead of time. Admission is $27 for adults and $13 for children ages 4 to 12.

Sombrero Beach is another short drive. It has public restrooms, picnic tables, and shallow water good for wading. On weekdays it’s not crowded.

For rainy days, the Florida Keys Aquarium Encounters in Marathon has interactive exhibits where kids can touch stingrays and feed fish. And there’s always the mini golf and basketball courts right on Key Colony Beach when you want to stay close.

How Do You Get to Key Colony Beach?

Most guests fly into Miami International Airport (MIA) and drive south on US-1 / the Overseas Highway. The drive takes about two hours. Once you’re past Key Largo and hitting the longer bridges, the views open up and the trip stops feeling like a commute.

Key West International Airport (EYW) is about an hour south if you prefer a shorter drive from the other direction, though flight options are more limited and typically pricier.

A car is necessary in the Keys. There is no practical public transit connecting Key Colony Beach to Marathon’s restaurants, grocery stores, or attractions.

Once on the island, your assigned parking space is at The Cay, and you can walk or bike to everything within Key Colony Beach. The causeway from US-1 takes less than a minute by car.

Tips from Our Team for a Week at Sandbar Serenade

We manage the property and hear from guests regularly. A few things worth knowing before you book:

The 7-night minimum keeps the pace relaxed. Most guests tell us that by day three they’ve stopped checking their phones.

Hurricane season runs June through November. If you’re booking during those months, we recommend travel insurance. Our travel insurance page has more details on coverage options.

Set the A/C to 78 degrees when you leave the condo. The Keys are humid, and running the A/C colder than necessary can cause moisture issues. The unit has ceiling fans in every room to supplement.

Check in is contactless starting at 4:00 PM, and checkout is by 10:00 AM. We send access details and arrival instructions after you complete our check-in form.

The property is non-smoking, no pets, and no parties, per Monroe County and HOA rules. Quiet hours apply out of respect for neighbors at The Cay.

Book Sandbar Serenade directly to save 15% or more compared to Airbnb and VRBO. You skip the platform fees and get the same property with the same management team.
