Discover the best Marathon Snorkeling Spots Underwater Paradise

Marathon, Florida, situated in the heart of the Florida Keys, offers some of the most spectacular snorkeling opportunities in North America. With its crystal-clear waters, vibrant coral reefs, and abundant marine life, it’s a snorkeler’s paradise waiting to be explored. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced snorkeler, these seven locations provide unforgettable underwater adventures.

1. Sombrero Reef

Depth: 6-25 feet | Skill Level: All levels

Sombrero Reef is the most popular snorkeling destination near Marathon and for good reason. This spur-and-groove reef formation is marked by a 142-foot lighthouse tower visible from miles away. The shallow areas (6-12 feet) are perfect for beginners, featuring brain coral, sea fans, and colorful tropical fish. More experienced snorkelers can explore the deeper sections where you’ll find larger fish, nurse sharks, and spotted eagle rays. The reef is part of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. Most snorkel charters depart from Marathon marinas and reach the reef in about 30 minutes.

2. Coffins Patch

Marathon Snorkeling Spots. Located between Sombrero Reef and the shore, Coffins Patch offers excellent snorkeling in a less crowded environment. This patch reef system features scattered coral heads rising from a sandy bottom, creating a natural aquarium effect. Look for queen angelfish, French angelfish, yellowtail snapper, and the occasional sea turtle. The calm conditions here make it ideal for families and first-time snorkelers.

3. Delta Shoals

Marathon Snorkeling Spots. Delta Shoals is a hidden gem that many charter boats skip in favor of more famous reefs. This means you’ll often have the reef to yourself. The healthy elkhorn and staghorn coral formations attract schools of blue tangs, parrotfish, and sergeant majors. The site is particularly good for underwater photography due to the vibrant coral colors and excellent visibility.

4. Thunderbolt Wreck (Shallow Section)

Depth: 25-40 feet | Skill Level: Advanced Snorkelers

Marathon Snorkeling Spots. While the main wreck sits in 115 feet of water (for divers only), strong free-divers and advanced snorkelers can view the upper portions of this 188-foot ship from the surface. The artificial reef created by the Thunderbolt attracts massive schools of fish, making it worth the trip even if you can’t dive deep. Most snorkelers enjoy the abundant marine life in the water column above the wreck.

5. Content Keys

Marathon Snorkeling Spots. The Content Keys area, accessible by kayak or small boat from Marathon’s backcountry, offers calm, shallow snorkeling perfect for families with young children. The seagrass beds and patch reefs here are nursery habitat for juvenile fish, rays, and sea turtles. You’ll often spot starfish, conchs, and horseshoe crabs in the sandy shallows. This is one of the best spots for a mellow, uncrowded snorkeling experience.

Located offshore of Fat Deer Key, East Washerwoman is known for its dramatic elkhorn coral formations and excellent visibility. The reef attracts large schools of grunts, snappers, and jacks, as well as occasional reef sharks and barracuda. The site requires a boat to access and is best visited with a local charter captain who knows the mooring locations.

7. Duck Key Patch Reefs

Marathon Snorkeling Spots. The waters around Duck Key, just north of Marathon, feature numerous small patch reefs perfect for snorkeling. These isolated coral heads rise from sandy bottoms and attract a surprising diversity of marine life. Look for spotted moray eels, spiny lobsters tucked into crevices, and cleaning stations where larger fish line up to be groomed by small wrasses.

Snorkeling Tips for Marathon

  • Best time to visit: April through October offers the calmest seas and best visibility
  • Book morning trips: Winds typically pick up in the afternoon, reducing visibility
  • Wear reef-safe sunscreen: Chemical sunscreens damage coral to protect the reef
  • Don’t touch anything: Coral is fragile and protected by law
  • Bring an underwater camera: You’ll want to remember what you see
